Generally, any organization or person that intends to directly solicit contributions in North Carolina, or intends to hire a person or business to solicit contributions in North Carolina, must first obtain a license from the Charities Division. Organizations must renew their licenses each year to maintain licensed status.

Nonprofits operating and fundraising in North Carolina must register with the North Carolina Charitable Solicitation Licensing (CSL) Division. Check out the online filing instructions or this handy checklist for completing your registration.

Required Documents

  • A copy of IRS Tax Determination Letter
  • A list of names and street addresses for all directors, officers, trustees, and salaried personnel (the entity’s address may be used)
  • A list of names of the individuals in charge of solicitation activities
  • A list of names, street addresses and phone numbers for the individuals or officers who have final responsibility for custody and/or distribution of contributions
  • IRS Form 990, CSL Annual Financial Report Form, or an audited financial statement
  • Copies of any Fundraising Disclosure Forms regarding relationships with fundraising consultants, solicitors, or co-venturers (if applicable)
  • The dollar amount of contributions received by the entity in the immediate preceding fiscal year.
  • A completed Notary Signature Form
